Where Did Golf Begin?

The origin of golf dates back to ancient civilization. For instance, some historians believe that golf is based on a Roman game known as paganica . Participants would use a bent stick to hit a leather ball. As the Romans conquered various countries in Europe, paganica spread. Over time, it evolved.

There’s another game known as chuiwan that could also explain the rise of golf. In China, people played chuiwan between the eighth and 14th century. Participants swung a golf club towards a small ball and attempted to get the ball in a hole. As the years passed, the game may have spread to Europe.

Several other theories attempt to explain who invented golf. For example, people in England played a game similar to golf that was called cambuca. Meanwhile, the French played a golf-like game with the name of “chambot.”

Today, most people attribute the roots of modern golf to Scotland. In the 1400s, the Scottish played golf. The sport was banned in 1457, but the ban was lifted in 1502. One of the first known courses is found in Scotland, at the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Golf in the United States

Despite having been around for centuries, the sport of golf did not become popular in the United States until the 1900s. In fact, the first 18-hole course wasn’t built in the country until 1893. It was built in Wheaton, Illinois.

In 1894, the United States Golf Association was created. The Professional Golf Association of America was not formed until 1916, and it still remains the governing organization of the sport in the U.S.

Although golf was around in the early 1900s, it wasn’t widely popular in the U.S. It wasn’t until the 1920s that golf started to reach new heights of popularity. By then, people had started to follow golf tournaments. The sport grew as new athletes attained celebrity status and developed large fan bases.

For decades, golf only was popular among certain circles. Wealthy white men made of the majority of golf players. However, that changed as Tiger Woods and other big names started winning tournaments. People began to realize that golf was a sport for everyone.

In the 2000s, TopGolf made traditional golf more popular than ever. Because TopGolf is more social and less intimidating than a game on an 18-hole course, people who would otherwise have no interest in golf started to try the sport. Women, minorities, and millennials began to develop a greater love for golf.

Today, the sport is more popular than ever.

The Allure of Golf

It’s impossible to say why golf has survived through the centuries. But it is possible to explain why it’s as popular as it is today. The sport is easy on the body and is as relaxing as it is fun. Furthermore, it’s relatively easy to learn and you can find a golf course in almost every city in the United States.
