Seven Days in Utopia (2011 – G) | GolfShire Homes

5. Seven Days in Utopia (2011 – G)

Number five on our list of the best golf movies to watch this winter is, Seven Days in Utopia.

Robert Duvall stars in this 2011 adaptation from Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, a book by David L. Cook.

The story begins with an embarrassing tournament loss that leads to a public meltdown for pro golfer Luke Chisholm (played by Lucas Black), who proceeds to make things worse by driving his car through a fence in Utopia, Texas.

The fence happens to be on the property of Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall), a rancher and former touring golfer who decides to help Luke with his dilemma by taking him under his wing.

Under Crawford’s seemingly bizarre tutelage, Chisholm completely revamps his view of and approach to the game of golf while learning lessons that extend far beyond the greens.

This heart-warming story is peppered with mix humor and sincerity which is sure to leave you feeling warm inside, regardless of the weather outside.

Greatest Game Ever Played (2005 – PG) | GolfShire Homes

4. Greatest Game Ever Played (2005 – PG)

This film grants viewers with a bit of a golf history lesson as the story follows the unlikely success of a working class boy and his desire to show off his talent among top golf professionals.

Based on the Mark Frost book of the same name, this golf movie hit theaters in 2005. It tells the true story of young amateur and caddie Francis Ouimet (played by Shia LaBeouf), and his triumph over British stalwarts Harry Vardon and Ted Ray at the 1913 U.S. Open.

That victory is widely credited with popularizing golf in the United States, and it lends itself to a movie about the scrappy underdog coming through to beat the upper crust.

The Greatest Game Ever Played is a truly uplifting underdog story that is perfect for any golf movie night.

The Legend Of Bagger Vance (2000 – PG-13) | GolfShire Homes

3.The Legend Of Bagger Vance (2000 – PG-13)

Our number three pick on our list of the best golf movies to watch this winter is, The Legend of Bagger Vance.

Matt Damon and Will Smith combine forces to produce a heart-warming story of personal fulfillment and triumph over life’s many obstacles. The film was certainly not a financial success, grossing only $30 million and falling far short of its $60 million budget, but we’re sure any true golfer will have a soft spot for this one.

In the story Junuh, played by Matt Damon, is a legend in Savannah, Georgia, in 1916. He has looks, intelligence, money, a tournament-winning golf style and the prettiest girl in town, Adele Invergordon (Charlize Theron).

But the war damages Junuh’s psyche. Back from the trenches, he uses alcohol to retreat from life and golf. That is until Adele organizes an exhibition match between two golf legends, Bobby Jones (Joel Gretsch) and Walter Hagen (Bruce McGill), and calls upon Junuh to play as well.

Things are not going well for Junuh until a mystical caddie called, Bagger Vance (Smith) shows up to help Junuh find his "authentic" golf swing.

Tin Cup (1996 – R) | GolfShire Homes

2.Tin Cup (1996 – R)

How could we not include Tin Cup on our list of the best golf movies to watch this winter? From the opening song by the Texas Tornadoes (A Little Bit is Better than Nada) to the U.S. Open showdown with Don Johnson, this golf movie strikes the perfect pitch.

Not only is it easily one of Kevin Costner’s greatest roles, it helps that Costner can actually play golf! Cheech Marin also lends his comedic talent and Don Johnson offers a great performance as fictional PGA all-star David Simms. Rene Russo plays Simm’s girlfriend, a lovable side-kick who becomes involved with Costner after she catches his eye during a golf lesson.

The most famous scene is when Costner keeps hitting ball after ball into a water hazard in front of the green just to prove (eventually) that he can make that shot, rather than simply dropping behind the hazard.

We won’t give away any more but if you haven’t seen this one yet you should. Tin Cup is filled with laughs, drama, and romance. This golf movie is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

 Happy Gilmore (1996 – PG-13) | GolfShire Homes

1. Happy Gilmore (1996 – PG-13)

Name another movie that features appearances by both Bob Barker and Lee Trevino. Go ahead, I dare ya! Can't do it — this is the only one.

Whether you're a fan of Adam Sandler or not, you'll enjoy this nutty flick about a hockey player whose slapshot produces prodigious golf drives.

This golf movie is not only credited as one of Adam Sandler’s most memorable performances, but also founded the “running start golf swing,” that has inspired so many YouTube videos of novice and professional golfers trying to replicate Happy's run-up drive.

The movie depicts Happy’s quest to beat rival Shooter McGavin (Christopher MacDonald) with the help of his one-handed golf coach “Chubbs” (Carl Weathers).

Perhaps the most unforgettable scene is the profanity riddled confrontation between Happy (played by Adam Sandler) and Bob Barker (playing himself). This cult-status golf movie has left generations of young golfers quoting its punchlines ad nauseam and is sure to leave you laughing.

 BONUS: Caddyshack (1980 – R) | GolfShire Homes

BONUS: Caddyshack (1980 – R)

A true classic. Combine the comedic talents of Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Ted Knight, and Chevy Chase and what you end up with is simply the best golf movie ever made.

With countless memorable lines, and outfits that epitomized everything we loved about the 80s, this flick is as good as it gets. Go ahead; try NOT to do your Bill Murray “it’s in the hole” impression. It’s unavoidable.

If you poll golfers about their favorite movie, Caddyshack wins in a landslide. This isn't just the most popular golf movie ever made, it's a cult classic even outside of the golf community. (Don't bother with any of the sequels: they are uniformly terrible.)
